Zaira Wasim, a girl from the hinterlands of Jammu and Kashmir made it big in 2016 – she acted alongside Aamir Khan in the critically and commercially acclaimed Dangal.
The movie represented a woman’s struggle against the clutches of patriarchy to fight for her rights. Ironically, the actor who impersonated wrestler Geeta Phogat is being forced to apologise for reasons known best to the self appointed moral custodians of society.
Wasim, just as Phogat was, is embattled on many levels. Her religion, her region, and her gender is being held against her. Her crime? It was to become an independent woman at the tender age of 16.
Whilst the hypocrites are crying themselves hoarse opposing Wasim’s rise, there are some who are supportive of her growth.
Here’s how the Twitterverse is reacting.
