Three months into 2017 and Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You is already being called one of the ‘Top Hits of the Year’. After making its way to everybody’s playlist, many artists have released their versions of the song as well. YouTube is flooded with song and dance covers of Shape of You.
After the video of IIT Roorkee’s students’ performance went viral, a group of Odissi classical dancers has joined the Shape of You bandwagon too.
The video is shot at some of the heritage locations in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Odissi is one of the oldest dance forms in the world. With the rising popularity of western dance styles in India, our classical dances have lesser and lesser new enrolments.
With this video, the group would like to convey that dance and music have no language barrier. Along with this, they also show us how beautifully the past and the present can be amalgamated.
In another part of the world, the Maritime Bhangra Group released a video of two of their members dancing to a Bhangra version of Shape of You.
While the video is fun to watch, their remix of the song is even better. The group on their YouTube page says that they’ve done this video to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis.
This energetic Bhangra performance by Bhangra Empire in the NBA has indeed caught a lot of attention on social media. The group performed during the Half-Time to a fusion of iconic pop songs and desi beats.
