German supermarket chain, Edeka, releases a tearjerker of a Christmas ad. The spot, which, like most great commercials, has very little to do with the actual product or service being advertised has racked up almost 30 million views on YouTube in just a week after its release.

On the eve of World AIDS Day on December 1, Prankbaaz shared this video that shows a girl in Delhi buying condoms. The video has garnered over 2 million views on YouTube.

#COP21 #ParisClimateConference

On Monday, November 30, major world leaders including PM Narendra Modi reached the French capital to deliberate upon and find solutions to the issue of global warming. The 21st session of the ‘Conference of Parties’ which is also called COP 21 became a global social media trend as soon as the talks began in Paris.

#COP21 has clocked over 1 million tweets since the event kicked off. Other major hashtags doing the rounds on Twitter include #ParisClimateConference and #ClimateChange with the former having over 2 lakh thousand Twitter conversations to its credit.

#SixWordsStory

On Tuesday, Dec 1, #SixWordsStory started taking Twitter by storm. The notion that a storyteller doesn’t always need a lot of words to communicate their tales found resonance on social media. The trend was engineered by Rajnigandha to coincide with the Times Lit Fest 2015 in Delhi. Over 16,000 stories and conversations were tweeted with the hashtag.

#ChennaiFloods

On Wednesday Dec 2: Torrential rains returned to Chennai. The city was soon left crippled as flood water stormed into houses, train stations, hospitals and airports. The heaviest downpour in Tamil Nadu in over a century became the top news story in across national and international media. Twitter became the tool for citizens, relief agencies, news outlets to disseminate information and offer help to those stranded in floods.

A number of hashtags started to surface on Twitter. #ChennaiFloods with 4.5 lakh tweets became the top trend. Other trends like #ChennaiRainsHelp was a close second with nearly 4.1 lakh tweets. The hashtag is being used to coordinate relief and rescue work in the city.

Thursday, Dec 3: Hours after British MPs backed the government’s plans to extend airstrikes against Islamic State group in Syria, citizens from across the world reacted to the news. The hashtag soon became a worldwide trend and has since been used nearly 5 lakh times.

On Friday, Dec 4: Press Information Bureau (PIB) India found itself in the eye of the storm after a photoshopped image of PM Modi showed him looking through the circular window of a chopper — at rooftops and submerged streets with remarkable clarity. An earlier image tweeted by PIB had shown PM Modi looking at a hazy view. Hundreds of tweets pointed out the stark difference between the two images and mocked PIB.

#MuslimApartment

On Saturday, Dec 5: Hours after reporters from CNN and MSNBC were seen inspecting the San Bernardino shooter’s home early Friday, Muslims on Twitter posted photos of the inside of their apartments using the hashtag #MuslimApartment. The satirical postings won favour among other social media users who were equally troubled by the media’s actions. The hashtag has so far clocked nearly over 14,000 tweets.

Facebook Buzz

Paris Climate Conference and Chennai Floods are currently the biggest talking points on Facebook. Pictures of flooding in Tamil Nadu’s capital are doing the rounds and so are articles and news reports from the ongoing Paris Climate Summit. Other topics which showed up on users’ news feeds included the PIB photoshopped pictures of PM Modi, Mark Zuckerberg’s status announcing the birth of his daughter and Pakistan’s claim on Koh-i-Noor.
