Twitter Character Limit Increased to 280, Users Have a Field Day

In a blog post dated 26 September, Twitter announced that it would try out a longer limit of 280 characters in languages impacted by cramming, that is, all languages except for Japanese, Korean, and Chinese, in which it is possible to convey twice the amount of information using the same number of characters.

However, plenty welcomed the 280 character limit, which was a top trend on Twitter for most of the day. Some even tried to test it out, with hilarious results.

Many Twitter users lashed out against the decision, believing that it would compromise the brevity that Twitter stands out for.

Many also took the opportunity to poke fun at US President Trump, a prolific Twitter user.

Will ‘felicitous’ be the new ‘farrago’?

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who happens to be a very active Twitter user, ‘welcomed’ the doubling of the character limit.

Twitter users immediately commented on Tharoor’s verbosity with several humourous replies.
