If you have noticed your friends and strangers on social media coloring their profiles blue recently, and wondered what new Internet fad you have missed out on, let us full you in.

This is not a fad. It’s a awareness campaign started to make the world aware of what is happening in Sudan right now.

A massive crackdown that resulted in the death of dozens in Sudan. This prompted people to spread the #BlueForSudan in solidarity with one of the victims of the unrest - Mohamed Mattar, whose favourite colour was blue.

The 26-year-old graduate of London's Brunel university died protecting fellow protester in Khartoum on 3 June.

Mattar has changed his profile picture to Blue the day on Twitter before he was shot and killed. The unrest was a result of a long running protest against the long running ruler Omar al-Bashir, who was dethroned ina coup in April, but the protests continued to rock Sudan, as per this Al Jazeera report.

Since then thousands of social media users have switched their Instagram and Twitter Profile picture to the same colour, using the hashtags #blueforsudan.

#STAND FOR SUDAN and #PRAYFORSUDAN are other hashtags floating to get the world to take notice of the injustice happening in Sudan.

Several have critices mainstream media for giving little to no coverage to the unrest and the government for ignoring the severity of what is happening there.

In the days since it first appeared, the colour has been adopted by social media users to stand for Sudan & represent all victims of the June 3 killing, which came after months of protests demanding democratic rule.
