Along with being an independence activist in the national movement for freedom, GV Mavalankar was also one of the guiding force with Sardar Patel in the education front of Gujarat and co-founded the Ahmedabad Education Society along with Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Amritlal Hargovindas.

He also proposed an institution like Gujarat University as early as the 1920s, which later came to be founded in 1949.
