The fourth National Handloom Day was observed on 7 August 2018, to honour Indian handloom weavers and celebrate the rich cultural legacy of handlooms in the country.

The central government had declared 7th August as National Handloom Day in 2015. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugrated the first National Handloom Day in Chennai.

7th August was chosen because of its significance to India’s freedom struggle movement. On 7 August 1905, the Swadeshi movement was launched in the Calcutta Town Hall. The movement sought the revival of domestic entrepreneurship.

“Let us take pride in our handloom heritage,” said Smriti Irani

Minister of Textiles, Smriti Irani tweeted in support of the weavers invested in the Indian handloom industry.

“I thank our weavers who continue to preserve India’s handloom legacy. We are blessed to have wide range of weaving traditions that define our culture & diversity. Let us take pride in our Handloom heritage and make efforts towards promoting the same,” Irani wrote in her tweet.
