So after outraging on Snapchat (Evan Spiegel) and Twitter (Sonu Nigam), Indians have now unleashed their fury on yet another social media platform. The object of their hate, this time around, is singer Katy Perry.
When Perry took to Instagram on 19 April to post a photo, little did she know that her post would garner such anger.
The singer posted photo of goddess Kaali with the caption “current mood”. She could have meant that she’s in no mood for bullshit, or in the mood to destroy all evil from the world or in the mood to feel as powerful as a goddess.
But Indians on Instagram took to name-calling. Some even went on to accuse her of appropriating Hindu culture.
Perry is no stranger to Indian culture. In 2010, she got married to her now former husband, Russell Brand, in a traditional Indian ceremony in Rajasthan.
She also found some support within the community on Instagram as many of her fans asked not to take things seriously.
"Ma'am please don't listen to the hatred...some of us have made their habit of getting offended... it has become a national past time," a fan said.
"I really appreciate your interest regarding Hindu religion. Loads of love from India," said another.
