Just when you thought that people in the country have finally moved on from making what’s on someone’s dinner plate into a national debate, Delhi based law student, Arunima Bhattacharya, found herself explaining to a passionate Hindu classmate ‘how you justify eating beef.’

This classmate of hers from ‘section B’, whom she has never met in person, sent her a private message on WhatsApp, after he couldn’t come to terms with the fact that Arunima, who hails from a Hindu Brahmin family, could be fine with eating beef. Arunima had earlier shared her liberal views on the matter of beef eating in another group.

The conversation (WhatsApp chat) that followed, tested Arunima’s patience until she could no longer deal with the classmate’s out-of-the world analogy between beef eating and incest (wait, what?), and later took to social media to share her incredulous story.

Her classmate's passionate, but baffling, arguments will leave you wondering which logical fallacy should be applied here. Maybe all?

But beef-eaters (religion no bar) are familiar with the criminalising attitude that is hurled upon them in this country over their choice of food. Couple of years ago, a Muslim man was lynched to death by a mob on suspicion of possessing cow meat.

Cows are more precious to Hindus than people, because even the suspicion of possession of beef can cost you your life, earn you rape threats and in my case, attach the tag of a ‘cannibal’ because ‘cow is our mother’. If I eat beef, or a Muslim eats pork, that’s a personal life choice and we don’t (need) moral policing in such choices,” Arunima told BeingIndian.com when asked about her stance on the issue.
