On Tuesday, 3 September, netizens were inundated with memes after the news of a man in Gurugram was fined Rs 23,000 for violating the newly amended Motor Vehicles Act did the rounds on the Internet.

Identified as Dinesh Madan, the man was fined Rs 23,000 by the Gurugram Traffic Police for not carrying the Registration Certificate and not wearing a helmet. “I wasn’t wearing helmet and didn’t have Registration Certificate (RC),” Madan told news agency ANI.

“The traffic police asked me to give him my scooty’s key but I denied. Immediately he printed a challan of Rs 23,000 and seized my vehicle.”

While many on Twitter commended the traffic police and the government for the newly amended rules, others poked fun at the situation with funny memes.

The newly amended Motor Vehicles Bill was implemented on 1 September by the Union Government and proposes hefty penalties for the violation of traffic laws. With this, the government aims to reduce accidents and fatalities on roads by 50 percent in the next five years.
