Give your mouse a free rein, draw a random pattern and watch as beautiful music is born from it. Google’s new interactive doodle to commemorate musician Oskar Fischinger allows users to create their own unique music.

Here’s a sample of Ed Sheeran’s Shape Of You played using Google’s doodle.

Fischinger was an abstract animator and artist well known for creating musical animations long before computer graphics and music videos came into being. In short, he was the ‘baap’ of all music videos. He contribution to the sci-fi movie world is commendable, to say the least.

To celebrate the 117th anniversary of the German-American artist, Google, on 22 June, unveiled this mini musical workshop that connects visual output to music.

The dashboard allows you to switch instruments, alter the tempo, and try out a different key. Play around with the delay function, add an echo or two, or use the ‘carry on’ option. And read all about Oskar Fischinger while you’re at it.
