A touching new advertisement by Gillette has gone viral on social media. The ad shows a father-son duo in conversation, as the father teaches his transgender son how to shave.
“Whenever, wherever, however it happens – your first shave is special,” reads the tagline to the ad.
The advertisement has garnered several reactions on social media with many people applauding the initiative.
“It’s not just myself transitioning. It’s everyone around me transitioning,” is one of the most moving lines in the ad.
The advertisement is being considered by many to be a huge step towards representation of transpeople in mainstream media.
However, the advertisement has also received some backlash on social media. The argument focused on the use of transpeople as a marketing strategy and the lack of ‘real support’.
Advertisements play a huge role in changing perspectives, enhancing visibility of otherwise marginalised communities, and fostering inclusion. However, it can be argued that such representations are often used for achieving market gains.
