Following the death of two school students who were mowed down by a speeding bus on July 29, 2018, thousands of students from various schools and colleges, as a mark of protest, started controlling traffic in Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka.
Protests turned violent on the eighth day with the death of two more students as the police started firing rubber bullets and tear gas to break up the demonstrations.
Dozens of vehicles were vandalised. At least 4 people were injured, journalists were beaten up and their cameras taken away.
Students have taken to social media to talk about road safety issues, appealing the media for coverage and the government for safer roads and stricter regulations.
Social media influencers such as Nas Daily took notice and came out in support of Bangladesh students, stating that road safety is a “reasonable ask”.
