Sporting legends Abhinav Bindra, Jwala Gutta, and Somdev Devvarman have not taken Shobhaa De’s opinion that Indian Olympians are a “waste of money and opportunity” very well.

The self-appointed “opinion-shaper” and “social commentator” posted a tweet on Monday saying that the goal of the Indian athletes competing at the world’s largest sporting event is to take selfies and come home empty handed.

These athletes, mind you, have spent unimaginable hours bearing the pain that it takes to reach at a level that allows them to represent their nation internationally.

But they wasted no time in showing her her place.

Selfies are Fine, But Medals are Important: Milkha Singh

There’s nothing wrong with athletes clicking selfies or having fun, said legendary sportsman Milkha Singh, when asked about Shobhaa De’s tweet regarding Indian athletes.

However, he added that it is important that athletes perform well, win medals and make the nation proud.

Indian wrestler and two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar said that Olympics is a huge world event and that winning a medal did not mean that the athletes are wasting the nation’s money. Kumar then said that one must spend a day with the athletes to understand what they go through to reach the heights they do.

Not Just Athletes, Everyone Gave De a Piece of their Mind

Not just athletes, actor Gul Panag, journalists and just Indians in general gave De a piece of their minds.
