Leaders across the political spectrum on Monday, 14 October, greeted Indian-American economist, Abhijit Banerjee, for winning the 2019 Nobel Economic Sciences Prize.
From PM Narendra Modi to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, leaders lauded Banerjee who, along with his wife Esther Duflo and American economist Michael Kremer, won the award “for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.
“Congratulations to Abhijit Banerjee on being conferred the 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel,” PM Modi said in a tweet.
In a similar tweet, CM Mamata Banerjee said, “Another Bengali has done the nation proud,” referring to former Indian cricketer, Sourav Ganguly’s alleviation as the BCCI chief on the same day.
He is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, according to his profile on the MIT website.
