Supreme Court on 9 October upheld its ban on the sale and bursting of crackers. A bench headed by Justice AK Sikri put on hold the sale of firecrackers with immediate effect. The bench said its 12 September order permitting sale will get implemented only from 1 November 2017 onwards.
This judgement evoked mixed reactions from people. Many expressed a sense of relief while others felt that this ban marginalised Hindu festivals.
Many felt this was the first step to reduce pollution, and it shouldn’t be given a religious angle.
Author Chetan Bhagat also spoke out against Supreme Court’s ruling.
