India’s leading street rapper Naezy the Baa is back before the release of Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy and we asked him to explain the meaning of the famous street slang that he uses regularly in his songs.

Born in the slums of Kurla and brought up in a very orthodox Muslim family, Naved Shaikh is now the role model for all the gully rappers in India.

He released his first song ‘Aafat’ on YouTube which was shot and edited on his iPad and that was when he got noticed for the first time.

Words like Hateli, Pateli, Shooter, Bantai and more, which most of us do not use in our day to day life. Naezy the Baa explains what they actually mean.

“I actually thought it’s too early to make a movie about us but she (Zoya Akhtar) said it would not be a biopic, it would be a little fictional so I agreed if it’s just an inspiration then it’s fine.”

Gully Boy releases on 14 February and let’s make it clear once again, it is not a biopic! The movie is a fictional story inspired by the life of Naezy and Divine.

“It’s looking very good. I’m enjoying it. Although the rapper is quite different, he’s a new character who comes straight out of her imagination. Very different from my life. The dressing sense and the style is very different from me. Even though we came from the streets, we would always keep up with the trends.
