So my month always begins on a really good note, I have enough money to go to a really nice restaurant or to the mall, pick up what I want, basically spend on whatever I like. But at the end of every month, I end up with very little money. Last month I ended with only hundred rupees.
So, I’d been telling myself for a while that I should put aside a small amount, maybe 5,000 rupees in a savings account, but that never ended up happening because I spend on food, travel etc. And most importantly, because I don’t do what my father asks me to do every week, which is to actually check my bank balance, I never know how much money I’m spending and how much is left in my bank account.
So, a friend told me - why don’t you start by putting your money into an SIP, and I was like, what’s that?
And then she threw words at me like ‘FD’ and ‘mutual funds’ and ‘PF’ etc. and I was just really lost. I realised that I knew nothing about the world of savings and investments. But I don’t think I’m alone in this and I think a lot of us are really struggling with money management, which is why I decided to see if others are also sailing in the same boat as I am and I decided to start with my colleagues by quizzing them on some basic financial questions. I also went onto the streets and spoke to a bunch of random strangers about their knowledge of basic finance and investments.
