The Rajasthan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (RAJUVAS), Bikaner, is the only veterinary university in the state. It accommodates more than 1,200 students, a few of whom discussed with me their uncertain future.

The last vacancy for veterinary doctors came out in 2013. Since then, they have been waiting eagerly for vacancies to be filled. Life in the college is lived through strikes, meetings with ministers, etc. for their problems to be heard.

“After completing our degree, we expect that having studied at a government school, we have a certain job security. However, in the last five years, there has been no job vacancy announced by the government. The last vacancy was in 2013. After that, in the 2017 budget, the Vasundhara government announced 900 positions that have still not been filled.”

A student told me that according to Swaminathan Ayog's report, there should be 11,000 doctors present in the state for animals. However, students say that the total number of positions for veterinary doctors is 2,000, in which 1,100 are still vacant.

“Rajasthan is India’s first state to have a separate Gopalan Department, however, there is not a single vet doctor in even one gaushala.”
Dinesh Kumar Poonia, Student

Students who have completed their Bachelors and Masters courses from the university and now pursuing further studies desperately wait for vacancies to be filled as well. Their tensions mount everyday.
