Phillaur Faces a Possible Flood, is the Govt Acting Quick Enough?

Can the government act before it’s too late?

Punjab’s Phillaur has been facing a flood-like situation since Monday, 19 August.

Owing to torrential rain, Punjab's Phillaur has been facing a flood-like situation since Monday, 19 August, causing a lot of problems for residents like us. Moreover, the lack of preventive steps taken by the government has created problems for the people of Phillaur.

Some reports also stated that two lakh cusec of water was released by Ropar Headworks into river Sutlej. The continuous flow of water into roads and houses has become misery for residents.

The ground was 10 feet below water in a school near the Punjab Police Academy on Qila Road. The Sutlej is not far from here, only 1.5 kms approximately. The water had trickled onto the road when I last visited the spot.

Low-lying areas have also been emptied and most people evacuated. It is becoming difficult for people to cultivate their crop as well. In the villages, people are affected even more.

Manish Kumar, a working professional, was struggling to get back home when he told me,

“Government is not helping us. People who are stuck are making efforts to move to a safe place, but authorities haven’t helped in evacuating them.”

Water hasn’t entered the city fully but, if more water is released, people living there could be affected too. While some are getting help, is the government doing enough to prevent a situation like this? Perhaps not.
