The small town of Muvattupuzha, in Kerala’s Ernakulam district, has been witnessing consistent rain since last night. I live near the Muvattupuzha river, one of the main tributary rivers flowing through the state, which, due to the rain, is almost at the road level at the moment.

There was a nice little walkway across the river, but now, all you can see is the top of the lamp post. Water levels have increased to an alarming level.

The town of Muvattupuzha is around 30km from Kochi, and 90km from Idukki and Munnar, which makes it fall within the  foothill region of the Western Ghats.

That said, however, it's only in the low-lying pockets the situation is as aggravated as it was last year. I just came from Kochi, and the situation in the city isn't as bad and normal life continues.

Several dams have been opened up to remedy the situation. However, I visited the Malangara dam and there, on both sides, you can see a lot of waste accumulating, caused due to the landslides, incessant rains and changing water levels. The garbage here also includes household appliances like fridge, washed down from elsewhere.

You can reach the Kerala state helpline at 9446568222 and the toll-free number on 1070 or log on to keralarescu.in where you can find details and locations of people who have been displaced and are in need.

Godspeed, take care and be safe!
