The sari has ruled the fashion scene in India forever. It still makes a stunning statement in both its traditional avatar as well as its modern variants. The 9 yards of woven magic have come a long way and will never go out of style. Here’s why-

1. Vintage Chic

The drapes of the sari hide everything that needs concealing. This pure chiffon magic looks stunning on the gorgeous Madhubala.

2. Classic Everyday Wear

The sari makes for a no-fuss, comfortable daily outfit. Nargis carried off this simple girl-next-door look with great ease.

3. Flamboyant Party Wear

Mumtaz gave a retro party twist to the traditional saree. A bit of bling and a really tight drape made this version Mumtaz’s signature style. Of course she had the perfect figure to pull off the flamboyant look in the 1968 chartbuster Aajkal Tere Mere Pyar Ke Charche from the film Brahmachari.

4. The Sensuous 90’s Drape

From Sridevi’s sensuous moves in Kate Nahi Katate Yeh Din Yeh Raat to Madhuri’s sexy Dhak Dhak Karne Laga, the sari dropped its traditional look and became rather bold. The fitted choli and playful side pallu made for a fearless yet graceful outfit.

5. Sizzling on the Dance Floor

Desi Girl Priyanka Chopra brought the sari back on screen in a big way, teaming it up with this trendy-backless-halter-bling blouse. It’s desi and it’s sizzling hot!Perfect for the dance floor.

6. Sari With a Pocket!

And the newest addition to the legendary sari is a pocket! Well someone had to think of this, with cell phones turning into inseparable accessories for the ladies. Designer Suman Bajaj has created a multifunctional sari that is stylish and functional.

We wonder what’s next for India’s most versatile garment! Maybe a knee length sari for that rainy day?!
