Significance of Maha Navmi

Maha Navami is the last day of Navaratri and the third and final day of Durga Puja. On Maha Navami, Goddess Durga is worshipped as Mahisasuramardini which means The Annihilator Of The Buffalo Demon. It is believed that on Maha Navami Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahisasura. On this day Goddess Durga won over the evil with her power and wisdom, therefore, it is believed that Maha Navami is also acknowledged as the eve of starting something new on Vijya Dashmi i.e., Dussehra.

Depending upon the starting time of Navami Tithi on the previous day Navami Puja and fasting should be done on Ashtami Tithi. There is a rule that if Ashtami and Navami merge together in Sanyakal (auspicious time) on Ashtami then Ashtami Puja, Navami Puja and Sandhi Puja are done on the same day.
