India is celebrating the Bengali New Year – ‘Pahela Baishakh’ 2019 – on Monday, 15 April, this year.

The festival of ‘Pohela Boishakh’ (which literally translates to the first day of Boishakh month) marks the first day of Bengali calendar, and is celebrated with great zeal and fervour in the Indian states of West Bengal, Odisha, Tripura and parts of Assam.

Hindus and Sikhs in different parts of the country observe this day as the harvest festival. The day is celebrated as Vaisakhi in north and central India, while it is celebrated as Vishu in Kerala and parts of Tamil Nadu.
