After celebrating the Ganpati festival with utmost fervour, people are now gearing up for Ganpati Visarjan. Those who had installed idols of Lord Ganesha in their houses, or at pandals in public places for Ganesh Chaturthi, will now be immersing them in water bodies on the third, fifth or the tenth day, as per tradition.
Today, 12 September, is the last day for Ganpati Visarjan.
Just like the Ganpati Sthapana, there is shubh muhurat and puja vidhi for Ganesh Visarjan as well. Here are the details for the same:
On the day of Visarjan, the family that has installed a Ganpati idol performs aarti for Lord Ganesha, after which the prasad is distributed. Visarjan starts with the Uttarang Puja, in which five things, namely deep (oil lamps), pushp (flowers), dhoop (incense), gandh (fragrance) and naivedya (food) are offered to Ganpati.
After the aarti, one member of the family shifts the Ganpati idol forward 5-10 minutes before stepping out for Visarjan. It depicts that the time for visarjan has come. Ganesha idols are then taken with a procession for visarjan.
