Most people wrongly think they can’t carry off leather – but I find it to be one of the most versatile and flattering fabrics around (if it is styled well, of course)!
From the Kardashians to good ol’ Ozzy Osbourne, everyone loves some leather! And I thought I’d join the bandwagon too, after I spotted this faux leather skirt at Forever New at a flash sale a few weeks ago.
Leather and lace – the alliterative sound accompanying the combination gives it such a nice ring, doesn’t it? I love how even though lace and leather (faux, in this case) have such different textures , they go together so well. I’m a fan of faux leather in general. Its always super easy to build a semi-glam outfit around one faux leather piece.
The idea behind this outfit was to take a fabric as edgy as leather and pair it with something super feminine and delicate, like this lace crop top I picked up at Tibetan Plaza in Bangalore. The colours – maroon and black – create a dark palette perfect for a night out.
When it comes to accessories, I wanted to keep it simple – the skirt was the hero of the outfit and I wanted it to stay that way. If you don’t have a simple gold link chain in your jewellery box, you need to get your hands on one, pronto! It goes with everything from a white tee and jeans to something as tricky as this outfit! It’s an accessory I reach out to almost every time I need to add a little extra to an outfit quickly. For the shoes, I chose classic sky-high peep toe pumps. This pair is from Aldo and can do no wrong – except if you’re on your feet all night, then the 7-inch heels on these babies can be lethal!
Aside from the vertical discomfort, I’d definitely wear this outfit to a night of clubbing or a hot date on a Saturday night!
If you’re wondering where to get yourself a skirt like this one, Zara and Forever 21 usually have quite a few pieces in faux leather. Generally, finding a skirt in the fabric won’t be too difficult. If you’re open to shopping online, Koovs has something very similar to this on their site right now. Lace crop tops were all the rage last season and can easily picked up at stores and online sites that sell clothes sourced from China and Hong Kong, and even at smaller boutiques in Mumbai off Linking Road.
If you’re worried about whether this outfit would suit different body types – don’t be. The skirt is high waisted and cinches at the waist, flattering the slimmest part of your body. If you want to add some curves you can always add a belt worn above the navel.
I hope this post inspired you to experiment with leather! As someone who went from running away seeing anything leather at the mall to someone who now has a (faux) leather dress, skirt , leggings, AND pants, believe me when I say that once you’re sold on it there’s no turning back!
