Sawan Somwar is of great significance for the Shiva devotees. Keeping Sawan Somvar Vrat — or fasting — on Monday in the month of Shravan is said to bring Lord Shiva's blessings for good health, protection from evil, help during the difficult times and bring success in their lives.

However, keeping fasts can be tricky. However, if you have the time and are willing to spend some time in the kitchen but are not sure of what to eat during your Sawan Somwar Vrat, here are some food options that you can try.

Sabudana Khichadi

A popular dish for fasts made from soaked sago, peanuts and some potato is always a winner. This makes for a wholesome meal and keep your stomach full for a long time. Just squeeze a lemon over the khichdi and enjoy the goodness of sago.

Quick tip- Just remember to soak the sago two-three hours prior to make the Sabudana Khichdi, otherwise it would turn out rubbery.

Makhana Kheer

You can make some makhana or fox nut kheer. This sweet dish is both heavy and healthy to keep you going though your day. It is super easy to make and you either have it hot or prepare it in advance and refrigerate it fro later.

Quick tip- Roast the makhanas and crush them before adding it to the milk and let it boil for a while. You can also add some cardamom to add flavour to the dish.

If you don’t want to put too much effort into preparing food for Somwar Vrat, simply boil some potatoes, add some salt and give it a tadka with jeera (cumin) and peanuts and you are good to go.

Potato Fries

You can have it as your breakfast or evening snack with tea. These are always easy to make and can be your lifesaver during Somwar Vrat if you can for a crunchy snack. You can also make some chutney with dried mango powder and sugar and enjoy munching.

Quick tip- Add some Kutu/Singhare ka atta, green chilly and coriander to your chopped potatoes and mix them together with a little bit of water before deep frying them in hot oil. This will give your fries a crunchy, spicy twist.

You can also try some pancakes made from buckwheat flour to make a change to your usual food habits during Vrat.
