5 runs were needed off the last ball for Rajasthan Royals to beat Punjab Kings on Monday night in Mumbai.
Sanju Samson, having scored a century, was at the crease but even though he hit the last ball high and far, the Arshdeep Singh delivery landed straight into the hands of Deepak Hooda near the boundary line and Punjab won their IPL 2021 opener by 4 runs.
Sanju had completed his century in the 18th over by the end of which RR needed 21 runs off 12 balls to win the match.
However, the first ball of Riley Meredith’s 19th over got Punjab back into the game with Rahul Tewatia reaching for a wide ball and in the process nicking it to KL Rahul behind the stumps.
Chris Morris was then the last of Sanju’s partners as RR needed 13 off the last over and 5 runs off the last two balls.
However, Sanju refused to take a run on the second last ball after he had hit it to deep extra cover, which could have fetched them a run, even a double. Instead, he elected to take strike for the last ball but holed out to deep extra cover as his side fell short by four runs.
The team eventually fell short by 4 runs as the RR skipper got out after making 1 63-ball 119.
RR had got off to a worse possible start, losing their power-hitting all-rounder Ben Stokes to Mohammed Shami in the first over of the innings. Soon Manan Vohra, the other opener was sent back, leaving the Jaipur franchise at 25 for two in the fourth over.
What followed though was an imperious show of batting from Samson as he clobbered seven sixes and 12 fours to take the game to the wire.
He built a couple of half-century partnerships with Shivam Dube and Riyan Parag and one of 45 with Jos Buttler to keep his team in the match.
Earlier, a 105-run partnership for the third wicket in just 46 balls between skipper K.L. Rahul (91 off 50 balls) and Deepak Hooda (64 off 28 balls) helped Punjab Kings post 221/6 in their 20 overs.
Punjab Kings, who lost opener Mayank Agarwal early, saw Rahul and Chris Gayle add 67 for the second wicket with the West Indian batsman being the dominant partner as he gave his side the initiative.
Gayle's 28-ball 40 comprised two sixes and four fours as he became the first batsman to hit 350 sixes in the history of Indian Premier League. Gayle's dismissal off Riyan Parag would have given hope to the Rajasthan franchise but then Hooda and Rahul pounded sixes.
Overs 13 and 14 bowled by Shivam Dube and Shreyas Gopal went for 20 each and saw six sixes, five of those coming of Hooda's bat.
From 110/2 in 12 overs, Punjab Kings moved to 150/2 in 14 overs.
The hammering didn't end there. After a couple of overs that went for 11 each, Punjab Kings took 15 off Chetan Sakariya, who had got the early wicket of Mayank Agarwal.
Even in the 18th over, when Rajasthan Royals got rid of Hooda and Nicholas Pooran, the Punjab franchise managed to get 14 runs.
Then came 15 off Mustafizur Rahman's fourth over, the innings' 19th.
Young Saurashtra left-arm pacer Sakariya got two wickets in his last over and conceded just five runs to finish as the most successful Rajasthan Royals bowler with three wickets for 31 runs in his four overs.
