Moroccan State TV Airs Make-up Tutorial to Hide Domestic Violence

The state channel of Morocco, which has no law to prevent domestic violence, apologised for airing the tutorial.

Moroccan state television channel, 2M, aired a make-up tutorial for women to be able to hide marks as a result of domestic violence, on 23 November.

The show named Sabahiyat, dedicated to women, met with backlash. A petition was initiated on Change.org – Don't cover domestic violence with makeup! – urging people to approach the High Authority of Audiovisual Communication (HACA), a regulatory body, against the video.

Apology Tendered After a Week

The petition quickly garnered support massive support, forcing the television channel to apologise for airing the tutorial.

In the post, the channel claimed that the content of the programme was not in line with the 27-year-old editorial stance of the channel in support of women’s rights. The channel also said that action will be taken against the people responsible for the error.

Morocco does not have a law against domestic violence against women and the violence against women is high, reports The Telegraph.

Social Media Outrage

The video was taken down from the website of 2M and an apology was published on its Facebook page on Friday. However, the video is still available on YouTube on the programme’s channel and has since been published on various channels.

Even as the channel took a week to tender an apology, the video remains in circulation, outraging the social media.
