Three drivers who ferried employees of an IT company at night were arrested on Tuesday for the alleged gangrape of a 26-year-old in a vehicle in Kolkata’s Salt Lake on Sunday evening. The woman, who is in her 20s, was found lying near a bus stop. She was taken for medical tests.
Subhendu Nag (26), Sourav Dey (20), and Arnab Bera (25), who have been ferrying IT employees for over a year, were not on duty that night.
A fourth accomplice, a security guard and a friend of the trio, has not been arrested yet.
The drivers were tracked down using their cellphones’ GPS. By afternoon, they had confessed, the police said.
The three have been arrested under Section 376D (gang rape) of the IPC, which carries a maximum punishment of death.
Shibu Shaw, the owner of the agency, said he had run a background check on the drivers but none of them had a criminal record.
