Early on Sunday, American-born Omar Mateen – pledging allegiance to ISIS – gunned down 50 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. It was the deadliest mass shooting in US history – and the worst terror attack since 9/11.
The horror of the deadly massacre transcended the US as nations across the globe came together to pay tribute to the victims. Candlelight vigils were held and cities all over the world rallied around Orlando; monuments and iconic buildings bathed in rainbow colours in a show of solidarity with the queer community.
