World No Tobacco Day is celebrated around the globe every year to encourage people to refrain from all forms of tobacco consumption and to create a global recall about the harmful effects of tobacco on one’s health.
This year, the focus is on ‘tobacco and lung health’. The World Health Organisation (WHO) hopes to raise awareness on two levels through this campaign:
To spread awareness and encourage others to quit, people took to Twitter to share their stories of kicking the butt.
One wrote: “I don't really throw things I'd consider achievements out there, but I hit 25 days without a cigarette and haven't smoked 500 cigarettes which is pretty wild.” While another wrote “Still not smoking. I feel great. You will, too!”
Some organisations like The World Bank, International Society of Media in Public Health shared some hard-hitting facts about tobacco and how smoking is harmful for one’s body and mind:
