We caught up with nutritionist and health expert Kavita Devgan to ask her about weight loss. What is the right way to lose weight and maintain it so that it doesn’t come back?
Here’s what Kavita had to say:
There is no quick-fix to lose weight, there’s no magic pill behind it, says Kavita.
Any diet which rejects an entire food group is not adequate for the body. If a diet deprives you completely of a specific kind of food, it’s very unlikely to last. The key is balance - stresses Kavita. There’ll be nutrient deficiencies if you go on a selective diet even for a week.
If you don’t want to end up yo-yoing with your weight, focus on all nutrients, yes, carbs too, stresses Kavita.
Whenever you look at a food, don’t focus on calories. Instead focus on if they are empty calories or if they have some nutritional value. This is the first step to weight loss.
The second rule is moderation. When you eat, stop when you’re feeling comfortable, not when you’re full. You’ve won the battle if you do just this much, says Kavita.
The third rule - focus on eating the right food so that you can cut out bad. In your plate, begin with the lowest calorie food. Begin with salads and soups, then move to protein and then the curry - right at the end.
During the course of the conversation, Kavita answered several weight loss questions about diet soda, butter chicken, staying healthy in Ramzan, among others.
