Too bad you can’t wear those Instagram filters in public and you know the anti-ageing products don’t work, else by now you’d look like a 12-year-old!

Since you also can’t get inside a washing machine and hope to come out wrinkle-free, after a decade of research, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard, have found an instant fix for your wrinkles and under-eye bags.

Seriously, no prick, no plastic, no expensive procedures, just one drop of this magical chemical potion and look at the results:

This sounds like a real deal, doesn’t it? Except there is one catch (there always is).

The Latest Wrinkle Remover From MIT - What Is It?

In its prime, natural human skin can be stretched about 180% and still return to its original state. But MIT’s artificial skin can be elongated more than 250% without sagging or becoming damaged. Imagine the joy if instead of cosmetic surgery you could slather on a brand new layer of skin? (Photo courtesy: Olivia Labs)

The miracle potion which tightens your skin and smooths the under-eyes is a silicone-based polymer solution which forms an invisible“second skin” but it works only for 24 hours.

The cream known as XPL (short for cross-linked polymer layer), is dabbed on the skin and once it dries, it creates a second, invisible layer of skin which naturally makes your face look decades younger and tighter. The new transparent layer is elastic so unlike Botox, it makes your face look flawless, supple and healthy.

Simply put, it’s a kind of an invisible, ultralight Spanx for your face. Speaking of Spanx, don’t assume this will feel like being wrapped in cellophane - the layer is so light and thin, around 70,000th part of a millimeter, basically no one can tell you’re wearing it. MIT claims, you can go swimming, exercising or dance under the rain, that thing ain’t falling off unless you peel it from the edges.

Kinda sounds like the sort of thing that will have women beating down the doors of the University, but there’s a limit to its abilities - the effects last only a day.

So you can wear it for the Oscar red carpet and peel it like a layer of fevicol post the after-party but the gel ain’t wiping off your crow feet for eternity.

The layer is better than any waterproof makeup - resistant to moisture, heat and dust to the extent that it won’t come off even in Mumbai rains.

Not Just a Cosmetic Niche, the Cream Can Be Used To Treat Eczema, Dermatitis and Even Cancer

You read that right.

Ironing out the wrinkles is just one possible use for the cream - eventually it can be used as a moisturizer, to give UV protection to your real skin, it could also find a use in patients with severe skin problems like eczema or psoriasis, and also to give drugs through the pores, to treat skin cancer (in that case, the medication will also have to be cream based).

That’s possible because the gel locks the moisture of any ointment which is applied on the face. Instead of getting wiped, washed or smeared, the second skin forms a tight seal which can deliver drugs to a specific area.

The research has been published in the medical journal Nature Materials.

The Wait Is Over...

Well, almost but it will cost a bomb, roughly 500 USD (Rs 33,000 to be precise), for a month’s supply.

Experts say, once the large-scale production starts, the prices will fall but that can’t happen anytime soon because cosmetic giants will have to either tweak their products or come up with a new line to ensure the existing chemicals in makeup don’t interfere with the artificial skin.

As for the MIT and Harvard scientists who did the research, they all have equity stakes, and stand to get very very rich once this magical goop hits the stores!

And the cream is still awaiting US FDA approvals. But if you’re almost wrinkling and running out of effective options, loosen your purse strings because help is on the way!
