At a colourful ceremony, which included a presentation of India’s indigenous martial art forms, dances and sports, Modi said technology has contributed to a sedentary lifestyle.
“But with technology, physical activity has reduced. We walk less now and the same technology tells us that we are not walking enough,” he added.
The ‘Fit India Campaign’ launch was attended by Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju and this year’s National Sports Awards winners among others.
The Prime Minister congratulated the winners of the national sports awards and lauded India’s sporting achievements.
“We will take this movement to new heights with the cooperation of my fellow Indians. I am so glad that this movement is being launched on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, our hockey wizard,” Rijiju said at the launch.
From Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, politicians took to Twitter to congratulate PM Modi on his new campaign.
Rishi Kapoor and Karan Johar were among those from Bollywood who extended their support to the Fit India Campaign on Twitter.
PM Modi lauded India’s athletes today, and in turn, India’s famous athletes have come out on Twitter in support for the campaign. From Sachin Tendulkar to Mary Kom, Indian athletes showed solidarity to the cause of fitness and a healthy India.
Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah and Union Minister Smriti Irani took to twitter to join in the support for PM Modi’s campaign.
Vice President of India, M Venkaiah Naidu, former Olympian and MP Rajyavardhan Rathore and cricketer VVS Laxman posted on Twitter in honour of India’s hockey legend.
The colourful ceremony included performances from children to showcase India’s many indigenous martial art forms.
Speaking at the event, PM Modi urged citizens to take the movement forward and incorporate the mantra of fitness into every aspect of our lives.
Olympic athlete and freestyle wrestler Geeta Phogat was the latest athlete to take to twitter to show solidarity with PM Modi’s Fit India Campaign.
