World heart day is observed on 29 September with an aim to raise awareness about the cardiovascular diseases, their prevention and how the affect the people globally.
the studies conducted by World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that there are around 17.8 million deaths every year around the globe due to the cardiovascular diseases and this makes it important to raise awareness about the diseases and its prevention.
There may be different causes of heart attacks or strokes like use of tobacco, consumption of alcohol, unhealthy lifestyle or lack of physical activities.
The date for World Heart Day was decided by the World Health Organisation(WHO) and World Heart Federation (WHF) in the year 1999.
The idea of changing the day from the last Sunday of September to 29 September was proposed by the president of World Heart Federation (WHF), Antoni Bayés de Luna.
Since the first year of its celebration, World heart day has been an annual event that has been sponsored by the non-governmental organisation, World Heart Federation (WHF).
It was in May 2012 that the leaders from all around the countries joined the global movement to raise awareness and prevent deaths due to heart attacks or strokes. This was their first step towards reducing the mortality rate due to non-communicable diseases around the world by at least 25% by the year 2025.
According to the World Heart Federation, “Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is accountable for nearly half of all NCD deaths making it the world’s number one killer.”
They aim at collecting and distributing updated information related to cardiovascular diseases to keep the people updated and well informed.
In order to celebrate world heart day, various public talks, seminars, podcasts, screenings , marathons and other sports events are organised by World Heart Federation (WHF) and their member organisations all around the world.
There are various events like women's marathons, cookery shows, and art competitions that are held to raise awareness about the Cardiovascular diseases and its prevention in women and children.
There are various events organised on the national and community levels like community walks, healthy eating events which encourage the people to promise themselves to make healthy changes in their eating habits and way of living.
The theme for this year is 'harnessing the power of digital health to improve awareness, prevention and management of CVD globally'.
This theme emphasises on promoting healthy practices to keep the heart diseases at bay.
They shall focus on points like reduce the use of tobacco, quit smoking or drinking alcohol, participate in physical activities and encourage the people around you to do the same.
