“There is no doubt that chikungunya can’t be the cause of death,” said Union Health Minister JP Nadda, as chikungunya claimed the sixth victim in Delhi on Wednesday.
Nadda, during a media briefing, continued to insist that there was no need to panic as adequate supplies of medicines and testing capabilities were available across the country. He also said that the ministry had asked the Delhi government for a detailed report of the alleged deaths caused by chikungunya.
Stating that he had asked the Delhi Health Minister, Satyendra Jain, if he “needed anything”, the Union Health Minister said that the two were “working in accordance to the protocol” given by the Centre.
The Government of India has emailed Ganga Ram Hospital asking them to probe “a little more” into patients, who had allegedly died due to chikungunya, reported the hospital Chairman Dr DS Rana.
Dr Rana said that he couldn’t “say” if the deaths were due to chikungunya, but reported that there were no signs of any other diseases in the patients except organ failure.
Five patients were reported to have died within 48 hours due to chikungunya, while reports of the sixth victim came out on Wednesday.
