8-year-old Chrissy Turner has a rare form of breast cancer and is recovering from a double mastectomy which will (hopefully) wipe out her cancer. World over, no one her age has ever undergone such a surgery before.

In medical literature, there is no evidence of anyone as young as this adorable American girl to get a diagnosis of secretory breast carcinoma, which affects less than 1 in 1 million people and accounts for less than 1 per cent of all breast cancer cases.

In October 2015, the Turners learnt their daughter had cancer, when Chrissy confided in her mom and showed her the lump protruding from her little chest.

The Treatment

Medically secretory breast carcinoma is explained as a ‘slow growing breast cancer’. It can strike at any age, but is mostly seen in people under the age of 30. It is one of the rarest types of breast cancer and prone to an aggressive reoccurence.

Experts say the cancer is treatable with surgery.

I was scared the first time that I knew about it. But I knew that I could fight it off and I hope that I can fight it off.

In the surgery, her lymph nodes were removed to treat the cancer and she will not be exposed to repeated rounds of radiation which can weaken the patient. Doctors will have to keep a close watch on her for the next few years to make sure the disease does not reoccur and if it doesn’t, she can opt for breast reconstructive surgery after hitting puberty.

You hear about breast cancer all the time and you always see women. But to know your daughter, your eight-year-old daughter has breast cancer, never would have thought it in a million years.

Both of Chrissy’s parents are cancer survivors. Her mother, Annette, has battled cervical cancer while her father is currently battling a reoccurrence of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The family is neck deep in medical bills and reaching out to well-wishers for financial help via GoFundMe. They’ve also created a Facebook page, “Chrissy’s Alliance” to document her illness and bare her struggles. After her surgery, Chrissy will pick up where she’s left out and head back to school.

Meanwhile, Chrissy and her elder sister Brianna, have been very brave to get through this ordeal. Look at this inspiring message they released to the world: “Yeah, I’m a girl. And I fight like one too.”
