Among a lot of other questions that we were left wondering with after Game of Thrones Season 8, one was, “Why did Drogon melt the Iron Throne?” A lot of us thought it was a reaction to Jon Snow killing Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of dragons.
However, our answer is wrong. After getting a record 32 nominations for Emmy Awards, the show released the script of that episode on the Emmy Awards website and cites the right reason for the iron throne being melted.
Hence, Drogon merely breathed fire on what remained of the castle and the iron throne was ‘just a dumb bystander caught up in the conflagration’. Well, this answer may not satisfy everyone’s questions about everything in the last season, but it definitely will give some closure to the fans who were left disappointed.
HBO’s Game of Thrones won the race of Emmy nominations by securing the most number - 32 to be exact. It beat a 25-year standing record set by NYPD Blue (26 nominations in 1984). Through the course of its 8 seasons, Game of Thrones has received a total of 161 nominations.
However, the fans of the show weren’t really happy with the nominations. In the ‘Best Direction’ category, the network has submitted DB Weiss and David Benioff’s The Iron Throne, which was the final episode and the most criticized one. Along with it, also submitted are Miguel Sapochnik’s name The Long Night and David Nutter’s The Last of the Starks.
What’s surprising is that the season’s only two acclaimed episodes - Winterfell and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - were conveniently ignored in the race for Emmy nominations. The final episode has even been submitted for the ‘Best Writing’ category! It couldn’t be more ironic, given that the episode led fans worldwide to sign a petition for remaking the show.
