(On 25 August, a CBI court in Panchkula will deliver its verdict on a rape case against the head of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, self-styled godman, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. In the light of these developments, The Quint is reposting this story, which was first published on 18 October 2016.)

After a deep study of the scriptures and religious texts, self styled god-man Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insaan has come to the conclusion that there’s no dress code for holy men. If you look at any of his films, you’ll realise that he has taken all ‘dress-code’ liberties one possibly can, to become the undisputed king of bling.

At a recent event where he was promoting his latest film MSG The Warrior Lion Heart, the Dera Sacha Sauda leader said:

I have researched the scriptures, the religious texts – there is no dress code given for holy men. Nowhere does it say that the saints have to wear anything specific. If your thoughts are pure, you can be one with God even in a trouser and shirt.

The flamboyant guru also said that through his films he brings out the supremacy of Indian culture, and addresses social issues like fighting drug addiction and gender inequality. He is also involved in every aspect of filmmaking and it seems his followers love that about him, along with his outlandish costumes.
