Last year, when 35-year-old Shahid Kapoor decided to marry the 22-year-old Mira Rajput, the media and the film industry went into a tizzy. Not so much because of their 13 year age difference, but because the match was ‘arranged’ after the families met at a satsang.
However, over the past year, the couple has reaffirmed our faith in arranged marriages. We’re convinced: arranged marriages are just as cool as love marriages!
If you thought arranged marriages were lame or unfashionable, think again.
Or just stalk Shahid’s various social media accounts and all your doubts will disappear. The couple looks adorable and it’s remarkable how they found love in a ‘hopeful place,’ given that they met only three or four times before taking the plunge.
We’ve never really been sure about the old opposites attract adage. However, when you find an example which involves your favourite Bollywood star, well, you’re likely to sit up and notice. So were we, when Shahid went ‘Fida’ over Mira, a real girl with a college degree and no filmy connection.
And guess what? It was a ‘Shaandaar’ move by the actor, who confessed in one of his old interviews that he would like to come home to a “normal person,” a non-celebrity partner, who would rather discuss lunch plans than indulge in film industry gossip.
Arranged marriages are normative, but who says you can’t have fun with ’em? And that’s exactly what Mira did. Ms Kapoor-to-be knew what she wanted from her hubby – no red hair on the wedding day!
You read right! Mira married Shahid on one condition: that he come to his wedding looking dapper and sans the red hair.
Now that isn’t so bad!
