Shah Rukh Khan’s much awaited action-thriller Raees will finally hit theatres on 25 January and the film’s brand new trailer gives us a peek into the world of the shrewd bootlegger he plays on screen. The film takes us right back to the 80s in terms of its underworld theme, visual appeal and retro tunes.
While SRK as Raees will do what it takes to keep his bootlegging business afloat, Nawazuddin Siddiqui who plays his nemesis as a cop, is hell bent on destroying the illegal empire that SRK has built.
What comes as a real surprise in the trailer is Pakistani actress Mahira Khan. While her role is said to have been cut down in the film sizeably post India’s ban on Pakistani artistes, she has a significant presence in the trailer, as Raees’ love interest. Sunny Leone made it to the film’s first trailer too dancing along to Raees’ new-age version of Laila O Laila from Qurbani (1980).
According to reports, Rahul Dholakia’s film is loosely based on Abdul Latif, an underworld don who ran a flourishing bootlegging business in the Popatiyawad area of Gujarat in the 80s. However, the film’s producers have denied the same saying that Raees is a purely fictional character.
While Shah Rukh Khan looks convincing as Raees Aslam, Nawazuddin Siddiqui seems to be doing what he does best as a fearless police officer named Majmudar. Red Chillies and Excel Entertainment’s Raees has all the makings of a blockbuster, but will it spark fireworks on the big screen? Only 25 January can tell.
