Fans of Jagjit Singh who were remembering the legendary singer on his birth anniversary, got a rude shock today - the news of the death of lyricist and poet Nida Fazli.
Fazli, who had collaborated with Singh on several popular ghazals, passed away in Mumbai following a heart attack, he was 78. Born on October 12, 1938 in Delhi to a Kashmiri family, Nida Fazli’s father was also an Urdu poet. According to reports, while his parents migrated to Pakistan following the Partition, Fazli remained in India.
Delhi-based historian Irfan Habib remembers Nida Fazli as a young promising poet from Mumbai, who he had invited to a student’s union mushaira in Meerut in 1974.
Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, whose film Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin featured lyrics written by Fazli, has memories of him as a graceful and funny man.
Fazli who was known not just for his lyrics in Hindi films but also for his soul stirring poems and nazms was scheduled to make an appearance at the Jashn-e-Rekhta festival this month in Delhi.
