Reliance Entertainment's Amblin Secures 10 Oscar Nominations

Three films -- Green Book, First Man and Ready Player One -- backed by Anil D. Ambani-owned Reliance Entertainment's Amblin Entertainment have scored a total of 10 nominations for the 91st Academy Awards.

The nominations were announced in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

Green Book finds a spot in five categories: Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Viggo Mortensen), Best Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali), Best Original Screenplay (Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly) and Best Film Editing (Patrick J Jon Vito).

First Man, which features Ryan Gosling in the role of astronaut Neil Armstrong, has landed four nominations which tilt towards the technical aspects of filmmaker. It stands a chance to win in the Best Production Design (Nathan Crowley and Kathy Lucas), Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Visual Effects categories.

There's also Steven Spielberg-directed Ready Player One, also backed by Warner Bros. It is nominated in the Visual Effects category.

"It is exciting news, and truly says a lot about how a compelling story always works. We are extremely proud to be associated with both these films and we hope for the best," Shibashish Sarkar, Chief Operating Officer, Reliance Entertainment, told IANS.

India-Set Film Around Menstruation Lands Oscar Nomination

Period. End of Sentence, an India set film on the taboos around menstruation and featuring the real Pad Man, has made it to the Oscar nomination, it was announced here on Tuesday.

The film has made it to the top five nominees of the Documentary Short Subject category. Other nominees include Black Sheep, End Game, Lifeboat and A Night At The Garden.

Period... is executive produced by Guneet Monga and is co-produced by Monga's Sikhya Entertainment, which has backed films like The Lunchbox and Masaan.

Ecstatic about making the cut, Monga told IANS over phone: "We made it... It is beyond everything we thought."

The film is about women in India fighting against the deeply rooted stigma of menstruation and delving upon the work of real life 'Pad Man' Arunachalam Muruganathan.

Directed by award-winning Iranian-American filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi, the film is created by The Pad Project, an organisation established by an inspired group of students at the Oakwood School in Los Angeles and their teacher, Melissa Berton.

The 26-minute film follows girls and women in Hapur in northern India and their experience with the installation of a pad machine in their village.

2019 Oscar Nominations: 'Roma' and 'The Favourite' Lead The Race

The nominations for the 91st Annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday 22 January at 5:30 am US PT. Actors Kumail Nanjiani and Tracee Ellie Ross hosted the live announcement of nominees from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Los Angeles.

As has become tradition, the 91st Annual Academy Award ceremony will once again take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, 24 February.

No host has been announced for the show ever since Kevin Hart dropped out of the gig after homophobic tweets from the comedian resurfaced. According to reports, the Academy is now testing a host less format where different presenters will emcee different sections of the evening. Check out the list of nominations here.

People Are Waiting for Me to Fail: Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut has battled her way facing sexism, harassment and heartbreaks to emerge as one of the most powerful contemporary leading stars and the actor believes there are people waiting for her to fail.

Kangana established herself by playing characters dealing with emotional turmoil in her earlier films like "Gangster", "Woh Lamhe" and "Fashion", before gaining stardom with "Queen" and subsequently headlining powerful women oriented movies.

Though she delivered hits and cemented her position, Kangana's crashing of recent projects "Simran" and "Rangoon" were more talked about.

"I do feel there are people waiting for me to fail," Kangana told PTI.

Edgar Wright to Helm Psychological Horror Film

After delivering a box office hit with "Baby Driver", director Edgar Wright says his next project is a psychological horror-thriller set in London.

In an interview with Empire magazine, the filmmaker said that he is prepping a psychological horror-thriller and cited the likes of "Don't Look Now" and Roman Polanski's "Repulsion" as influences. It will have a female lead, reports hollywoodreporter.com.

"I realised I had never made a film about central London -- specifically Soho, somewhere I've spent a huge amount of time in the last 25 years," Wright said.

Amrita Singh May Face Court Battle in Property Dispute

Film actor Amrita Singh and her aunt Tahira Bimbat may have staked claim over 4 acres of prime property in Clement Town area of Dehradun city but they may be in for a long drawn court battle.

Last week, Amrita Singh along with her actor daughter Sara Ali Khan lodged a police complaint stating that the Clement Town property be protected from a land mafia and also put up a board claiming that the land belongs to them.

Legal experts say both Amrita Singh and Tahira Bimbat are likely to face a dragging court battle for a final settlement.

Chris Brown Investigated for Alleged Rape in Paris

Singer Chris Brown has again landed himself in trouble with the law after being accused of rape in Paris.

The 29-year-old R&B star is currently under investigation by French police after a 24-year-old woman claimed he sexually assaulted him in his hotel room between January 15 and 16, reports aceshowbiz.com.

According to French publication Closer, the woman said in the report that she and the "Turn Up the Music" hitmaker met at a club located near Les Champs-Elysees. The alleged victim said she followed Brown to the hotel where he stayed and where he reportedly raped her.

'Photograph' Gets a Release Date

Filmmaker Ritesh Batra's upcoming film "Photograph" is slated to hit the silver screen on March 8.

Batra on Tuesday morning took to Twitter to announce the release date of the film, revolving around a struggling street photographer who is pressured by his grandmother to marry. He convinces a shy stranger to pose as his fiancee.

"The story begins... 'Photograph'. Releases in cinemas in India on March 8," he tweeted.

Filmmaker Anurag Basu's next has four different stories set in an Indian metro. Actors like Abhishek Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao will star in the dark comic anthology.

The multi-starrer film is an action comedy that is about unavoidable jeopardies of life. It is a slice of life film with stories intersecting each other amid drama and emotion.

Anurag had shot major sequences with Abhishek in Mumbai and Kolkata in 2018.

The director has been busy shooting with Rajkummar and Fatima Sana Shaikh in Bhopal.

Actors Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanya Malhotra and Pankaj Tripathi are also part of the film.

Actor Aditya Pancholi Charged For Allegedly Abusing, Threatening Mechanic

A non-cognisable offence has been registered against Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi for allegedly abusing and threatening a car mechanic over the issue of bill payment, the police said on Monday.

The incident came to light when the 47-year-old car mechanic, Mosin Kadar Rajapkar, approached the Versova police station in western suburbs and lodged a complaint against the actor, an official said.
