This angry tweet by Deepika Padukone on 18 October, addressed to Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani, got the right result. According to reports, the Gujarat Police have arrested five men in Umra police station on Thursday, 19 October, for destroying the ‘Padmavati’ rangoli made by an artist in a mall in Surat.
According to Surat Commissioner of Police Satish Sharma, four of the men belong to the Karni Sena, while one of them belongs to the VHP. The arrest has been made under Sections 141, 149 (unlawful assembly), 451 (trespassing), and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code.
Two of the accused, Shailendra Rajput and Shanbhu Singh, along with 10 others, were booked by the police on Wednesday, 18 October, when the incident of vandalism was brought to light via social media and a complaint was lodged by the security team of the mall.
The police have assured that the remaining accused would also be arrested soon. The rangoli artist, Karan K, initially tweeted about the vandalism on 16 October after a mob destroyed the design he was making, which featured Deepika Padukone as Padmavati. Karan had spent over 48 hours making the rangoli, which was yet to be completed.
On seeing the tweet by Karan, Deepika immediately retweeted it with the images and tagged Smriti Irani, requesting her to look into the matter.
