Paramount Pictures has dropped the first trailer for the Tom Cruise-starrer Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel to the 1986 action classic Top Gun.

Top Gun starred Tom Cruise as Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell and Val Kilmer as Thomas ‘Iceman’ Kazansky, aviator pilots in the US Navy. It was directed by late filmmaker Tony Scott. The film is considered one of the defining blockbusters of the 1980’s and one of Tom Cruise’s most iconic roles, despite being early in his career.

A sequel has been in development for years and is finally set to release in 2020, a full 36 years after the original. Tom and Val return in their respective roles, and Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski takes over from Scott.

Watch the trailer below.

Judging by the trailer, the plot of the Top Gun: Maverick picks up 36 years later with an aging (only in numbers) Captain Mitchell refusing to let go of his thrill seeking ways. The brief official synopsis says: Pete “Maverick” Mitchell mentors a new generation of US Navy fighter pilot.

As with the first film, the highlight appears to be the incredible looking aerial action sequences. Oh and Tom Cruise has confirmed all the flying in the film is real. Reportedly, Kosinski has also experimented with new technology which delayed the film from its earlier release date of 2019.

The trailer was launched by Tom in a surprise event at the San Diego Comic Con on Thursday. Top Gun: Maverick also stars Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Miles Teller and Ed Harris. It is set to release in theatres on 26 June, 2020.
