Warner Bros. has released the first trailer of Mowgli which seems to be a dark adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Book. The live action film is directed by Andy Serkis and features Rohan Chand in the lead role. It also stars Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Freida Pinto.

Mowgli seems to follow Kipling’s tale more closely than earlier adaptations. Quite unlike the colourful, fun The Jungle Book cartoon we have grown up watching or even the 2016 film, Mowgli is dark, gritty and wild - quite literally. And of course, visually spectacular.

Watch the trailer here:

“We wanted to engage more closely with Kipling’s book. It is not so much of a child’s fairy tale. This has a reality to it. There are real consequences. It is definitely different from Kipling’s book and has a much darker approach.”
Serkis in a behind-the-scenes video

Mowgli is the story of a human child raised by a pack of wolves in the jungles of India. As he learns the harsh rules of the jungle, under the tutelage of a bear named Baloo and a panther named Bagheera, Mowgli comes to be accepted by the jungle folk as one of their own. All except Sher Khan that is.

Mowgli is scheduled for release on 19 October.
