The head of Britain's film academy says the lack of female directors in awards competition represents "an industry-wide problem."
The British Academy Film Awards have been criticized for not nominating any women for best director this year. Only one woman, Kathryn Bigelow, has ever been named best director at the British prizes, for "The Hurt Locker" in 2010.
BAFTA chairwoman Pippa Harris, a film and TV producer, said only 10 percent of the films entered for award consideration were directed by women, and "it needs to be 50 percent."
She says there's a wealth of female directors working in television, but they have had trouble getting noticed and moving on to feature films.
Speaking ahead of Sunday's awards ceremony at London's Royal Albert Hall, Harris said "men seem to find that transition much easier" but that things are changing.

The Favourite has kicked off the British Academy Film Awards by winning the prize for best British film, reports AP.
Best animated film goes to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, reports Guardian. Best sound goes to none other than Bohemian Rhapsody.
Best supporting actress award was picked up by the charming Rachel Weisz forThe Favourite. Other nominees in the category were Amy Adams – Vice, Claire Foy – First Man, Emma Stone – The Favourite, Margot Robbie – Mary Queen of Scots.
Rising Star award, which is voted for by the public, goes to Letitia Wright!
Best adapted screenplay goes to BlacKkKlansman – Spike Lee, David Rabinowitz, Charlie Wachtel, Kevin Willmott, while Best original screenplay goes to The Favourite – Deborah Davis, Tony McNamara.
Best original music was picked up by A Star Is Born. Another nominees in the category were BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Street Could Talk, Isle of Dogs, Mary Poppins Returns. Best supporting actor goes to Mahershala Ali for Green Book. Best cinematography was picked up by Roma.
Best special visual effects goes to Black Panther!
“I can’t believe we just won Best Original Music @BAFTA’s. I wish so much I was there but am at the Grammy’s to show them our love as well. We made a film about music. This means the world to me. Thank u to all our fans we love u so much, we wouldn’t be here without u #BAFTAs,” wrote Lady Gaga on Twitter.
Best film not in the English language goes to Roma. Best costume design goes to The Favourite.
Best director award was handed to Roma’s Alfonso Cuarón.
Best actor award was picked up by Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody. while Olivia Colman wins Best actress for The Favourite! Best film goes to Roma.
Host for the evening, Joanna Lumley takes a sly dig at Oscars 2019 going ‘hostless’ this season after comedian Kevin Hart stepped down following a backlash over past homophobic tweets.
