The Punjab police has booked singer Yo Yo Honey Singh following a complaint lodged by the Punjab State Women’s Commission which sought action against him for the vulgar lyrics in his latest song, ‘Makhna’, which they found to be offensive to women. Music producer Bhushan Kumar has also been booked.
The case has been registered at the Mataur police station in Punjab's Mohali district. Singh has been booked under Section 294 (punishment for obscene song and acts) and Section 509 (punishment for word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC, Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police Harcharan Singh Bhullar told PTI.
“He has also been charged under Section 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the relevant section of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986,” Bhullar said.
On 3 July, Manisha Gulati, chairperson of the commission, wrote to the Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Punjab DGP, and IG, Crime, Punjab asking them to take action against Yo Yo Honey Singh for using lyrics like ‘Mein hoon womaniser’ and ‘Silicon wali ladkiyon ko mein pakadta nahi’ in his song ‘Makhna’.
In her complaint, Gulati asked that the song be banned “at least from Punjab.” The commission had also asked for a report from the police officials by 12 July.
