When Salman Khan’s last film Tubelight failed to do well at the box office, he came to the rescue of the distributors and refunded them. By the same token, Shah Rukh Khan, reportedly refunded 30% to the distributors of the Imtiaz Ali film, Jab Harry Met Sejal that also starred Anushka Sharma.

Though he’s under no legal obligation to compensate for their losses, this could be perceived as an act of courtesy and responsibility from a big star looking to minimise the losses resulting from the poor performance of the film.

According to a report, Shah Rukh has compensated 15% of the losses to NH Studioz, which purchased the rights to distribute the film in the country at Rs 80 crore. Each account was distinctly checked and analysed by the actor’s team and other distributors were refunded 30% of the losses.

When Jab Harry Met Sejal tanked, distributors apparently sent distress messages to SRK, imploring him to make good the losses since the star had made substantial profits from the pre-sale of all India rights to NH Studioz, satellite, music and digital rights.

He had earlier allegedly refunded around 50 % of the proceeds to the distributors of Dilwale owing to insufficient box-office collections. He is also known to have refunded distributors of his films Ashoka and Paheli earlier.

2017 has been one of Bollywood’s slowest years in terms of revenue generation.
